Fireworks display on the shores of the Rhine river – Wine Festival in
Boppard's "Wine Village"
In Boppard on the Rhine river between Mainz and
Koblenz / Coblence, with its historical sight seeings like the elector's castle
(Kurtrierische Burg) from the year 1327, which, unlike others on the Rhine river, doesn't
crown above the town, but instead can be found near the river banks, which left remains of
the medieval town wall, the sacral work of art, the religious orders and monestaries, and
witnesses of the roman times, there are two wine festivals shortly after another every
year.
 The first wine festival takes place on the third weekend in September from
Friday to Monday and the second wine festival on the following weekend, the fourth
September weekend from Friday to Sunday. A highlight on both festivals is the firework
display on both Saturdays. Even though the fireworks under the motto "Lightning night
on the middle Rhine river" don't belong to the events of "Rhine in flames"
/ "Rhine aflame", they still attract thousands of visitors every year. The first
wine festival in Boppard took place in the year 1948. The firework belongs to the fixed
part since the 1970s.
The market place builds the romantic scenery for the
wine festival in Boppard, surrounded by pretty old half-timbered houses and the late roman
parish church St. Severus which is towards the Rhine river side, which was built on the
foundations of a roman military spa. Numerous wine booths and vine dresser alcoves invite
to a drink in easy atmosphere. Enjoyed are wines of the Boppard Hamm, which belong to the
vine growing district of the middle Rhine river "Mittelrhein". Snack bars, guest
houses and restaurants take care of your physical well-being. The entrance in the wine
village is free of charge.
 The wine festivals will each be opened with greetings from the Boppard wine
queen. On all days there are music bands, wind orchestra, bands and dance groups with
promenade concerts, dance music, music shows and dance presentations. On the first Sunday
the big wine tasting takes place traditionally at 11:00 a.m. in the old city hall. For
participation for the event, a sharing of expenses will be raised. The advance ordering
takes place at the tourist information in Boppard.
 Both
of the firework displays will be ignited on both Saturdays, each one at about 9:00 p.m.
from the opposite side of the Rhine river banks near Filsen. The illuminated Severus
church, the colorful light chains along the Boppard Rhine river banks and the illuminated
passenger boats cause the right atmophere even earlier. During each of the approximately
10 to 15 minutes of continuous fire work spectacle, the narrow Rhine river valley gorge
near Boppard turns into a lighted sea. Star explosion, lightning bombs and other exploding
firework displays draw pretty, magical pictures in the nightly skies. The hills which
border the Rhine river let the firework noise of the firecrackers and the rockets echo
even louder. The firework cascades, which plunge into the Rhine river from the opposite
side of Boppard, build the crowing end of the pyrotechnic show. This is how the
"Lightning night on the middle Rhine river" is an enjoyment of the special kind
for the eyes and the ears, which can only be experienced in few regions in Germany.
It's very attractive to watch the spectacle from a
boat, which cruises on the Rhine river. Who doesn't want to let this event pass, should
book a place on one of the almost 12 passenger boats, which gather on both Saturdays in
Boppard.
